A sporty, trailable new 22 ft kit yacht called the H22 will make its debut at the Melbourne Boat Show and Fishing Expo in July. Using an assembly system called Prefix, it comes in stages to suit "the working man's budget".
An amateur builder is said to be able to put the H22 together in 200 to 250 man hours. There is also a 30-footer. Exact price, somewhere under $20,000, will be announced at the Boat Show. Details: Prefix, (06) 295 5910.
Record ski-jump
In round one of the Mission Masters held at La Trobe Valley back in February, Curtis Sheers became the first Australian to water-ski jump over 90 metres (200 ft) off the 2.5-metre ramp. He backed up and recorded the longest jump in the world, a leap off the 2.5-metre ramp that spanned an incredible 65.5 metres.
Stejcraft Malibu
Victoria's Stejcraft Boats is pretty chuffed about Sheers' jumps. They were achieved behind its Malibu boat - available as the Skier and Tournament model - which is known for producing a clean wake and sporty drive. Details: Stejcraft boats, The Boat Place, 9879 2044. Or see them at the Boat Show.
Water-skiing marathon
Perhaps an even greater feat, excuse the pun, occurred during the Murray River Challenge late last year. A record was set for the 2113 km water-skiing marathon between Albury and Goolwa by Victoria's Brenton Mcgrath, who suffers from a rare type of leukemia, Sean Mcgrath, Ross Salmon and Neville Wilson. They took 27 hours to cover the course, and their ski boat was designed by Cyclone Boats (070) 565 761.
