Wollongong residents keen to reduce their household waste can find the information at their fingertips with Wollongong City Council's Waste Services information kit. The kit contains a fridge calendar, detailing green waste and recycling bin collection, annual household clean-up dates and information about council's waste education and visitors' centre at Glengarry Cottage.

Saving salmon

Salmon and tailor - two species of fish highly prized by anglers - will receive extra protection from the end of next month. Using nets to catch tailor and Australian salmon will be banned. The changes will help safeguard the species. A recreational bag limit of five fish applies to Australian salmon. Anglers are allowed to keep up to 20 tailor a day at a minimum size of 30cm. The move to protect both species from net fishing will have a minimal impact on commercial fishers with professionals using nets allowed a daily catch up to 100kg of each species.

Lake's future

Residents concerned about the future of Lake Illawarra have set up the Save Lake Illawarra Action Group to apply pressure to the Lake Illawarra Authority (LIA) and government agencies to reduce the amount of cosmetic foreshore work around the lake.

The group want the focus of lake rehabilitation to shift to water, shoreline and entrance concerns. They have agreed to work with council and the LIA to lobby for funds to improve the water quality of the lake.

Over 35s project

Wollongong will host one of 31 conservation projects across the nation targeting volunteers over 35 years. Volunteers will rehabilitate and enhance the Greenhouse Park at the Old Coniston builder's tip as part of a Federal Government initiative to reskill older job seekers. The Green Reserves project - funded by the Federal Government's Work for the Dole scheme - will teach volunteers ecological restoration techniques and give them the skills and experience to help community groups carry out conservation projects.
